DEEP DIVE OF THE WEEK

Before the Boom: Is Your Team AI-Trained for the Productivity Revolution?

DALL·E 3

With AI racing ahead, it's surprising our workforce productivity isn't sprinting alongside it.

Since 2006, we've seen more of a steady jog. But according to MIT's Erik Brynjolfsson, we might be in the quiet before a productivity explosion.

He introduces the 'productivity J-curve,' suggesting that productivity could dip after AI's introduction but then skyrocket as businesses integrate it into everyday workflows.

The good news: It later rebounds when those intangible investments start paying off, generating output that we can consume and measure. In short, the productivity looks like a ‘J.’ First it falls, or is lower than trend, and then it rises. We think AI may be in the early part of the J-curve now.

The potential of AI in reshaping how we work is massive. Recent research shows that up to 80% of the US workforce could be impacted by AI tools like large language models (LLMs), streamlining tasks and turbocharging efficiency

⏯️ Way With No AI vs With Al

The potential of generative AI in enhancing workplace productivity is starting to shine through.

In one experiment by research analyst Joachim Klement, a bunch of coders were tasked with a specific programming challenge. Half of this group were equipped with a generative AI tool, GitHub Copilot.

The results?

The group using Copilot finished their task in just 71 minutes, which is about 56% faster than those who didn’t use AI, taking 161 minutes.

Another study involved 200 university-educated pros who were given a writing assignment. Here, half of them used ChatGPT for help.

The group using AI wrapped up their work in 17 minutes, compared to the 27 minutes for the other group– that's a 37% jump in productivity.

More than just speed, the quality of work was also enhanced. The AI-assisted group scored an average grade of B, outperforming the C+ average of the non-AI group.

Generative AI basically leveled the playing field between the low and top performers.
