HOT THIS WEEK

Multi-modality is more alive than EVER… Or should we say Omni-modality?

This past week we had back-to-back product announcements and releases from OpenAI and Google.

Just in case you missed them or want to review them more extensively, here are the core announcements and keynotes:

Google I/O Annual Event: exuberance til exhaustion.

Google displayed a mega-event full of exuberance and shared over 100 announcements that left many questions about understanding Google’s extensive AI product lineup. You can check them all out here, along with their Google I/O event announcement and keynote.

OpenAI Spring Event: cozy yet powerful moves.

OpenAI front-runned Google, in a cozy and simplistic event that landed the message in a powerful way. They played it low-key and didn’t even mention at the showcase many of the incredibly powerful updates that you can check at the “Explorations of capabilities” section here, alogn with Spring Event announcement and keynote.

Because by now you probably know what the main announcements were, let’s discuss the potential implications of this crazy week.

Is this the ceiling for AI?

From these latest releases and what’s coming, it seems like AI has reached human-like capabilities, making it an extremely powerful tool for businesses.

Considering that these LLMs are trained basically with all the world’s knowledge, it’s reasonable to think that AI has reached its peak in terms of capabilities, and therefore we’re in front of an AI ceiling until we hit another major breakthrough.

But is this the case? We believe this is far from the truth, and here’s why:

It’s all about data efficiency.

The importance of high-quality data in training AI models plays a key role here.

Think about it this way. Back in the day we used floppy disks that barely stored 25MB and a few docs. Now, we can store terabytes within the same size of that old floppy disk.

With the same logic we can say these LLMs could be trained with all the world’s knowledge, but all that knowledge can still be organized in a much more efficient and reliable way to achieve better outputs.

So smaller, high-quality datasets can yield better results than larger, lower-quality datasets, with more efficient data usage in AI training.

As long as these efficiency gains keep evolving (and they will), the ceiling is yet to be seen.

The Benchmark for AGI: 3 Key Pillars

So if AI is going to keep getting better, how far are we from AGI? There are some key pillars that have to be solid and on point:

  1. Interaction:

For AGI to be truly effective, it needs to interact seamlessly with a wide range of applications out of the box.

The ability to perform tasks within various software without additional training is crucial.

    • Google seem’s to be a few steps ahead on this as they rolled out AI features for many of their products, so OpenAI should fight for those deals and integrations if they want to gain user market share in the long run.

  2. Personalization:

AGI must understand and remember detailed personal information about its users, including their preferences, goals, and specific needs.

    • This is another thing these companies are clearly working on (and improving fast) but are not quite there yet.

  3. Learning Speed:

AGI should continuously and quickly learn from interactions to improve its performance over time.

The ability to build a comprehensive data profile about its user and adapt in real-time is essential.

  4. Emotional Understanding (Bonus Pillar):

While not strictly necessary, an AGI's ability to understand and respond to human emotions would significantly enhance its effectiveness.

True emotional intelligence would allow AGI to interact in a more human-like and empathetic manner.

The Mindset to Embrace AI on Businesses and Use Cases

So here we are.

AI is close to bringing to fruition all those things that once we thought only had place in science fiction stories.

But now it’s time to actually put that into action. And it’s crucial that your businesses start adopting AI proactively and integrating it into their operations, and start now.

Key Points:

1. Proactive Adoption:

Early adoption is what will provide your business with a significant competitive edge. If you don’t put action now, you’re already late to the party.

  • Integrate AI into daily operations and encourage your team members to become familiar with AI tools, and get 1% better with them every day.

2. Where the edge is: building with AI.

The edge is not necessarily in using the latest or most powerful AI model. These are going to keep getting better and commoditized, so it’s already becoming a matter of preferences and needs rather than actual performance.

  • Instead of relying solely on existing AI tools, consider developing proprietary AI solutions tailored to your specific needs.

  • So you should think beyond just using AI tools and focus on how AI can transform your processes and operations.

3. Future-proofing:

  • Investing in AI now is essential for long-term success. Businesses that delay AI adoption risk falling behind competitors.

  • Continuous learning and adaptation to new AI capabilities will be necessary to maintain a competitive edge.

💰 BUSINESS EDGE

Both events had quite the opposite approach: from coziness and simplicity in OpenAI’s event to exuberance and buzz overload in Google’s. Yet both of them shared an incredible amount of use cases that will make a huge difference in those that know how to leverage them correctly.
