  • Ensure Data Quality: The first step in implementing RAG is to ensure that the data being fed into the system is of high quality.

    This means breaking out topics logically and ensuring that topics are covered in one place or many separate places. If the data is not organized logically, the retrieval system won't be able to retrieve accurate information.

  • Explore Different Index Types: Another strategy for implementing RAG is to explore different index types.

    This can include using hybrid search, which combines different types of indexes to improve the accuracy of the retrieval system.

    It can also include using different types of embeddings to capture the meaning of parts of the document.

  • Use Hypothetical Document Embeddings (HyDE): HyDE is an approach that involves searching for a vector close to a hypothetical answer to a query, rather than searching for a vector close to the question being posed. This approach can improve the accuracy of the retrieval system.

  • Set Up Retrieval Tools: Once the data is organized logically and different index types are explored, the next step is to set up retrieval tools. This can include making data sources that allow programmatic access, such as customer records databases, accessible to the orchestration layer. This allows the orchestration layer to query API-based retrieval systems to provide additional context pertinent to the current request.

  • Create Prompt Templates: After the retrieval tools are set up, it's time to create prompt templates. A prompt template includes placeholders for all the information that needs to be passed to the large language model (LLM) as part of the prompt.

    The system prompt tells the LLM how to behave and how to process the user's request, while the context prompt provides additional context from the retrieved information.

  • Orchestrate the System: Finally, it's time to orchestrate the system. This involves using the prompt template to prompt the LLM with the retrieved information and generate a response.

    It also involves using the orchestration layer to formulate a better search query based on the user's question, parametric knowledge, and conversational history.

Multiple Documents Query: First things first, ask yourself if you need a model that can pull information from several documents at once.

  • ✔️ If that's a "yes", then RAG should be on your radar because it's designed for this very purpose.

  • ⛔ If not, you might want to explore other solutions that are more tailored to single-document queries.

Domain Knowledge: Next, think about the domain or industry you're in.

  • ✔️ If pre-trained models out there already have a good grasp of your domain, then RAG could be a snug fit.

  • ⛔ On the flip side, if your domain is super niche or technical, you might need to either fine-tune a model to understand it better or look into other specialized models.

Data Availability: Now, let's talk data. Do you have specific data related to your domain, maybe from clients or other sources?

  • ✔️ If you do, that's awesome! You can plug this data into RAG and get it rolling.

  • ⛔ If not, you'll need to either gather the necessary data or consider models that don't require as much domain-specific input.

Re-ranking Preference: Here's another thing to ponder: after getting your search results, do you want to shuffle them around based on relevance?

  • ✔️ If you're nodding "yes", then you'll want to apply a re-ranking step to ensure the most relevant results bubble to the top.

  • ⛔ If you're content with the initial ranking, then you can skip this step.

Test Drive: Before making a final decision, it's always a good idea to take RAG for a test drive.

  • ✔️ If it purrs like a kitten and meets your needs, fantastic! Go ahead and adopt RAG for your system.

  • ⛔ If it's more like a bumpy ride, don't fret. There are plenty of other models and solutions out there to explore.

There are several case studies and success stories of businesses using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to improve their operations.

Implementing RAG in an LLM-based question-answering system has two main benefits:

  1. It provides timeliness, context, and accuracy grounded in evidence to GenAI, going beyond what the LLM itself can provide.

  2. It allows LLMs to build on a specialized body of knowledge to answer questions in a more accurate way.

Using RAG QA for Enterprise Search

  • Set Up a Knowledge Database: Compile a comprehensive database of information relevant to your enterprise (FAQs, product details, research papers, and more). Then organize those data in a consistent format using databases like Elasticsearch.

  • Integrate RAG QA: Implement RAG QA to pull information from your knowledge database when queried. Ensure the system is set up to update the knowledge database regularly, so the most recent information is always available.
