TOPIC OF THE WEEK
Can AI fully automate content creation?
Is your ultimate marketing goal centered around getting clicks?
Of course not. You aim to engage and convert your audience, not just generate content.
But driving conversions can be a challenge. Your content may draw traffic, but it's a missed opportunity without conversions.
Attracting readers is only the first step. You need to captivate them, guide them to take action and turn them into loyal customers.
ℹ️ Why This Matters Today
Think of content marketing as your secret weapon in business.
By creating content that educates, informs, and even entertains, businesses build a relationship of trust and credibility with their customers. It's a great way to make your brand more visible online, get your social media buzzing, and attract more potential customers.
Plus, it's a smart investment to get more leads without breaking the bank and keep your audience coming back for more.
💰 Impact On Your Business
AI speeds up content creation, saving valuable time and resources.
AI's great at nailing down what customers like and using that data to personalize content for them, boosting engagement and sales.
AI tools help find trending topics and predict customer interests for more relevant content creation.
AI enhances content distribution, making sure it reaches the most relevant audience.
The return on investment with AI is pretty solid – businesses are seeing real financial benefits.
Limitations of AI in Content Creation
We are all familiar with some common and current limitations of AI in content creation, such as:
Lack of creativity and emotional depth
Accuracy issues, particularly in complex or specialized subjects.
Ethical concerns, especially where trust is key.
Struggling with complex narratives like fiction, persuasive writing, or narratives rich in human emotions.
SEO Challenges as it doesn’t fully understand the subtle, changing aspects of SEO strategies.
So let's make sure you're using AI the smart way.
Here is a broad, actionable game plan to help you master AI for content marketing.
⚒️ Actionable Steps
1. Make AI Understandable and Accountable
AI can be like a complex puzzle. We need to make sure we can understand how it puts the pieces together. When you know how AI reaches its conclusions, you can ensure they align with your business ethics and goals. Plus, it builds trust among users and stakeholders.
What to do: Choose AI tools with clear, explainable features. Organize training sessions to help your team understand these explanations.
Quick tip: Look for AI platforms that offer 'explainability' features, like showing which keywords or data points influenced a content decision.
2. Regular AI Audits
AI systems can develop biases or inaccuracies over time, influenced by the data they're fed. These check-ups can help you catch any biases or slip-ups, keeping your AI in top shape and your marketing honest and fair.
What to Do: Schedule bi-annual audits of your AI algorithms to check for biases and accuracy.
Quick Tip: Use third-party experts for an unbiased review, and keep a log of AI decisions to spot any patterns.
3. AI Content Evaluation Standards
Without benchmarks, it's hard to gauge the effectiveness and appropriateness of AI-generated content. Setting clear goals for AI content (like accuracy and bias-free) means you keep your content high-quality and trustworthy.
What to Do: Create a checklist for evaluating AI-generated content for relevance, accuracy, and bias.
Quick Tip: Implement a rating system to regularly assess content against these standards like user engagement, relevance to topic, and inclusivity.
4. Diversify human reviewers
AI might not catch everything, especially the subtle stuff. That's where a team of diverse minds comes in. This team can spot biases or insensitive content that AI might miss, ensuring that your content resonates with a wider audience and avoids potential pitfalls.
What to Do: Include team members from varied backgrounds to review AI content.
Quick Tip: Hold monthly diverse review sessions for different perspectives on content.
5. Quality Data Management
Garbage in, garbage out. If you feed AI bad data, you'll get bad results. High-quality, well-managed data leads to more accurate and effective AI operations, directly impacting the success of your AI-driven strategies.
What to Do: Implement strict data governance and regularly update your data sets.
Quick Tip: Regularly update your data sets with current information and remove outdated or irrelevant data.
6. Change Management for AI Integration
Introducing AI into existing workflows can be disruptive. You need to make this shift as smooth as butter.
Effective change management eases this transition, addressing concerns like job security and role changes, and helps staff see the benefits of AI, fostering a more adaptable and innovative workplace culture.
What to Do: Develop a clear plan for integrating AI into business processes and address employee concerns.
Quick Tip: Regular Q&A sessions and mentorship programs can help ease the transition for your team.
7. Data Privacy Policies
With increasing amounts of consumer data being used, data privacy is a major concern. Strong privacy policies protect your company legally and build trust with your customers, ensuring that their data is handled responsibly. It's a win-win.
What to Do: Work with legal experts to formulate comprehensive data privacy guidelines.
Quick Tip: Implement strict access controls and encryption for customer data storage and processing.
AI-Generated Content: Balancing Automation with Authenticity
There is one big reason why Positional, a startup that specializes in helping content teams scale using AI, hasn’t launched an AI writing tool.
Nate Matherson, co-founder and CEO of Positional, suggests that AI-generated content doesn’t work well at scale.
“I come at SEO with a very paranoid perspective because search is constantly changing. There are algorithm updates all of the time, and I'm very hesitant to introduce another variable like AI-generated content to my website.”
What can you extract from this YT short?
Stop relying on regurgitated pieces of content from a tool.
Focus on creating content that’s uniquely valuable.
Why? Because 1. your readers’ needs should always be the top priority, and 2. there’s still Google’s SEO guideline to think about.
“I think there's definitely a place for AI writing tools in the outlining process. So like the introduction section of a piece or maybe a conclusion, or something like a social post. But I think your content should be uniquely helpful and original. Until I see an AI tool able to actually deliver that, I will be extremely skeptical that that content would actually perform that well and search.“
Another thing to keep in mind is that AI-generated content isn’t actually a new concept. Based on what Nate saw when he first started his business in the early 2010s, there was already plenty of low-quality content produced by AI.
That’s when Google introduced a series of algorithm updates that heavily penalized AI-generated content.
“And so Google has historically looked down upon AI-generated content at scale, as they would say, as a means through the FBI in search results. But then Google updated their guidelines, and they said, you can use it, there's kind of a place for it.”
But even Google has to keep up with AI at some point.
Today, Google Search guidelines don’t directly ban AI-generated content. Rather, it will reward “high-quality content, however it is produced.”
The caveat is that using any kind of automation, including AI, to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results violates Google’s spam policies.
That means content automatically generated with AI writing tools is considered spam.
Google’s spam-fighting efforts, including its machine-learning SpamBrain system, will continue to combat such practices.
I kind of took their statements as to say it's a part of the process and not the entire process. But what I've seen though, is that companies who genuinely want to use AI generated content are using it for that process.
🏆️ Golden Nuggets
✔️ Writers should always review AI-generated content for accuracy to maintain credibility and authenticity.
✔️ Transparency is key when using AI for content creation. Always be clear with your audience about the use of AI.
✔️ AI might unintentionally mimic existing material. Conduct thorough plagiarism checks to ensure AI content is unique and respects copyright.
⚒️ Actionable steps
✔️ Following Google's guidelines on AI-generated content, focusing on original, high-quality, people-first content demonstrating E-E-A-T qualities is also recommended.
